Designing Hybrid Intelligence for ESG Tracking: Early Findings from Interviews and Prototype-Based Co-Design

Abstract

This project explores how Hybrid Intelligence (HI) can support ESG tracking and carbon-related decision-making. It is focused on Danish SMEs, with a parallel collaboration with Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality. This focus is important because SMEs play a major role in value-chain emissions, yet often face limited resources, fragmented data, and difficulty navigating reporting and carbon-accounting requirements. We investigate how HI tools can provide businesses and public-sector actors with actionable support for carbon-footprint reduction, ESG sensemaking, and human-centered decision support. Empirically, the paper draws on semi-structured interviews with eight Danish organizations and on prototype-based discussions about future human-AI workflows. The interviews were analyzed using codebook-based thematic analysis. Early findings suggest that participants value AI as a sparring partner that can reduce manual effort and improve overview, but strongly prefer human oversight in validation, prioritization, and communication.
